Manufacturing production planning and bill of materials

From Spreadsheets to a Production Plan

Many manufacturers run production from a mix of spreadsheets, whiteboards and experience: bills of materials in Excel, stock counted by eye, components ordered when someone notices they are low, and product costs updated once a year. It works until volumes grow, the product range expands, or a key person is away.

We help you set up bills of materials, material requirements planning (MRP), work orders and production planning in the right system for your size and products, from a well-chosen app to an operations system such as ERPNext, connected to Xero or MYOB so stock and costs flow through to the accounts without retyping.

Built and supported by Kenomont: founder-led, Gold Coast based, with 20+ years building business systems, including a forestry export platform we have run since 2012 and real-time weighbridge integration since 2015.

Signs Production Has Outgrown the Spreadsheet

One or two of these is normal. Several at once means the business is ready for a proper system.

  • Production stops because a component ran out unexpectedly
  • Product costs are estimates, or haven't been updated since prices changed
  • Bills of materials live in several spreadsheet versions
  • Stock counts never match what the system says
  • Components are ordered when someone notices, not from a plan
  • Finished goods and component usage are retyped into Xero or MYOB
  • Nobody can say quickly what can be made with the stock on hand
  • The production schedule lives in one person's head

The Right System for Your Size

Simple products need a simple answer. We match the system to how you actually make things.

Use what your accounts already do

MYOB AccountRight can build simple assembled items, and some businesses only need better stock routines. We check this first.

A manufacturing app connected to your accounts

Inventory and manufacturing apps add BOMs, assemblies and production orders on top of Xero or MYOB, and are often the right answer for standard products.

An operations system alongside Xero or MYOB

For multi-level BOMs, MRP, work orders, scheduling or several sites, ERPNext runs production and stock while Xero or MYOB keep the accounts. Learn more

Connected costing and reporting

Actual material and labour costs by job or batch, compared with quotes, in reports that update themselves. Learn more

How We Set It Up

Production keeps running while the new system is set up and checked.

1

Understand how you make things

Products, sub-assemblies, routings, batch or job-based work, and where today's numbers come from.

2

Choose the system

We recommend an app, an operations system or a better use of what you have, explain why, and give you a fixed quote.

3

Clean up items and BOMs

One code per component, accurate BOMs for your main products first, and a stock count to set the starting point.

4

Set up, connect and run in parallel

BOMs, MRP and work orders configured, connected to Xero or MYOB, and checked against your current way of working.

5

Go live and keep improving

Your team plans and produces from the system; we support it and add to it as the business grows.

Production Planning FAQs

Material requirements planning works out what components you need, and when, from your bills of materials, the orders you need to make, and the stock you have. It tells you what to order and what to make, so production doesn't stop for missing parts.

Xero doesn't manage BOMs or production, and MYOB AccountRight can only build simple assembled items. Multi-level BOMs, MRP and work orders usually need a connected app or an operations system alongside the accounts.

No. The usual approach is to keep Xero or MYOB for the accounts and run production and stock in a connected system, so each does what it's best at.

It depends on the number of products, how complex the BOMs are and how clean the item data is. Cleaning items and BOMs is usually the biggest task. You get a timeline with the fixed quote.
