Numbers You Trust, Reviewed Every Month

Most growing businesses have the data. It's spread across the accounting software, the job or stock system, payroll and a few spreadsheets, and someone pulls it together by hand when there's time. By then it's old, and half the meeting goes on whose figure is right.

The Monthly Numbers Routine fixes both halves. We build one dashboard of the handful of numbers that matter, each drawn from one agreed source in the systems you already run. Then we run a short monthly review with you and your managers: what the numbers say against target, what changed, and what to fix before next month.

The research on how well-run firms differ from the rest keeps finding the same thing: tracking the right figures, setting targets and reviewing them regularly are among the habits most closely linked to better performance. The routine gives you that habit, built on one set of numbers everyone trusts.

Sound Familiar?

If any of these describe your monthly numbers, the routine is worth a look.

Numbers nobody trusts

The accounts say one thing, the job system says another, and the meeting turns into an argument about which figure is right.

Reports built by hand

Someone spends a day or two each month copying figures from three systems into a spreadsheet, and it’s out of date by the time it’s read.

Problems found too late

A job overran, a customer stopped paying or stock piled up, and nobody saw it until month-end or later.

The owner holds it all

The real picture lives in the owner’s head, worked out at night from emails and bank balances.

What You Get

A dashboard and a habit, set up together so one supports the other.

The handful of numbers that matter

Five to eight measures chosen with you, each with a plain definition, a target and a named owner.

One source for each figure

Each number comes from one agreed place in the systems you already run, so there’s one version of the truth.

A dashboard that updates itself

No copying and pasting at month-end. The figures refresh from your systems on a schedule.

A monthly review we run with you

A short, structured meeting with the owner and managers: what the numbers say, what changed, and what to fix.

Actions with owners

Each review ends with a short list of actions, who owns them, and when they’re checked.

Handed over to your team

A one-page agenda and the dashboard notes, so the routine carries on without us.

How It Works

Set up once, run with you until it sticks, then handed over.

1

Pick the numbers

A working session with you and your managers to agree the 5 to 8 measures, what each one means, and who owns it.

2

Find the source of each figure

We trace each number back to the system it should come from and fix any gaps where two systems disagree.

3

Build the dashboard

One page, updating from your systems, readable on a laptop or phone.

4

Run the first reviews with you

We facilitate the first monthly reviews so the habit sticks: targets, what changed, what to fix.

5

Hand over

Your team runs the review from then on, with the agenda and dashboard notes.

Who It's For

  • Owners who want to stop piecing the picture together at night
  • Finance and operations managers who rebuild the same report every month
  • Growing businesses whose numbers come from several systems and spreadsheets
  • Management teams whose monthly meeting runs on opinions rather than figures

When You Don't Need It

  • Everything runs in one system and its built-in reports already answer your questions.
  • You already hold a regular review on trusted numbers. You may just need a reporting tweak.
  • The data is in poor shape. A data clean-up or a workflow sprint may need to come first.

Who Does the Work

Kenomont is a business systems consultancy founded by Aaron Chambers, with more than 20 years of experience building and connecting business systems and the reporting that sits on top of them. We don't sell software, so the dashboard is built on whatever you already run.

That includes reporting for a forestry export and port management system that has received ticket data from the weighbridge system since 2015, where tonnages, contracts and invoices all have to agree.

Monthly Numbers Routine FAQs

A dashboard on its own often gets looked at for a few weeks and then ignored. The routine adds the habit: a short monthly meeting where each number has an owner, a target and a question asked about it, and where actions are agreed and checked the next month. The dashboard serves the meeting, not the other way round.

Usually 5 to 8, chosen with you. Typical ones are days from job finished to invoiced, work in progress not yet billed, debtors over 60 days, gross margin by job or customer, stock that hasn’t moved, days to close the month, and how long approvals take. We leave off anything nobody will act on.

Usually not. We pull from the systems you already run: your accounting software, job or stock system, payroll and the key spreadsheets. Where a figure comes from two places that disagree, we agree which one is the source of truth and fix the gap.

No. We set it up and run the first reviews with you, then hand the running of it to your team with a simple agenda. You can ask us to sit in later, but the aim is for it to run without us.

It’s quoted as a fixed price once we know how many systems the numbers come from and what state the data is in. If the figures need a clean-up or a connection first, we quote that separately and tell you why.

We won’t promise a number. What the research does show is that businesses that track the right figures, set targets and review them regularly tend to perform better than those that don’t. The routine gives you that habit, built on numbers you trust.
