Reviewing how a business's systems fit together

Someone to Own Your Systems

Most growing businesses make big technology decisions without anyone senior to own them: which ERP to buy, whether to replace a system, what a vendor’s quote should include, how the data should fit together. The result is software that half fits, projects that run over, and systems nobody owns.

A fractional CTO fills that gap for a few days a month. We become the person who owns your business systems: setting a plan, making and explaining decisions, managing vendors and projects, and making sure the systems and data work together. You get senior experience without a full-time salary.

This is about business systems and data, not software engineering teams or IT support. Kenomont has 20+ years building and running business systems, including a forestry export platform we have run since 2012 and a purchase order approval system for a retirement living provider since 2014, and leading that provider’s move from on-premise systems to Microsoft Azure as its client-side technical authority.

When It Makes Sense

Usually when the business has grown past the point where the owner or finance manager can make every technology call.

  • Big software decisions are made on a vendor’s demo and a gut feel
  • Several systems, consultants and vendors, and nobody coordinating them
  • A system replacement or ERP project is coming and nobody inside has run one
  • The finance manager has become the IT department by default
  • Data is spread across systems and nobody owns how it fits together
  • The business pays for software it doesn’t fully use

What a Fractional CTO Does

A senior person who owns your business systems, part-time.

A systems plan

Where your systems and processes are now, where they need to be and the order to get there, written down and kept current.

Advice on decisions

Which software to choose, keep or replace, with the trade-offs explained in plain English for the owners and leadership team.

Vendor and project oversight

Briefing vendors, checking quotes and scopes, and keeping implementations on track and on budget.

Data and integration oversight

Making sure systems connect properly and the numbers agree, so reports can be trusted.

A seat at the table

Regular sessions with the owners or leadership team, and a clear view of technology spend and risk.

Hands-on when it helps

Where we are the right people to build, fix or connect something, it is quoted separately. You are never obliged to use us for the work.

Common Questions

A senior technology leader who works with a business part-time instead of as a full-time employee. For established businesses like yours, the focus is business systems and data rather than software engineering.

An IT provider looks after devices, networks, email, security and support. A fractional CTO owns your business systems and how the business uses them: accounting, operations, CRM, reporting and the data between them. We work alongside your IT provider.

A set amount of time each month, agreed to suit the business, usually with regular sessions with the owners or leadership team. It can increase for a big project and reduce when things are steady.

A fixed monthly fee, agreed after a free initial chat and based on the time and scope involved. No long lock-in.

No. The advice stands on its own. Where we are the right people to build or connect something, we quote it separately, and you are free to use whoever suits you best.

Not usually. If you are building a software product with a development team, you need a different kind of fractional CTO. We work with established businesses that run on business systems.
